I transitioned to my first staff position about a year ago. Prior to that I had spent almost 10 years on the line between enlisted and officer time. I was extremely fortunate lead a Platoon as an SMP Cadet, then lead a second Platoon in combat after commissioning. As an XO I also served as a detachment commander and filled in for the PL since the position was vacant. Following that I went straight to Company Command. Going to staff was admittedly a tough transition at first. I still miss leading Soldiers and being in the fight. However, I’ve found ways to still have a positive impact. I’ve focused more on mentoring those around me and refining our BN level products. Recently I’ve been helping an NCO in another shop with his WOC packet and career planning. It’s not the same, but staff life can still be rewarding.
