I think LT. McDonough’s had good intentions when he planned to send some of the men from his platoon to the beach. Lt. McDonough realized that some of the men were starting to develop sores on their feet and bodies from scratching bug bites. The wet climate wasn’t helping the men with these sores because it wasn’t allowing the skin to heal. Anyone in the Army knows how vital it is to take care of your feet and body from infection. Lt. McDonough was trying his best to mitigate the issue that some of the men were having with their feet while also trying to make it seem like the patrol to the beach would be fun. Regardless of Lt. McDonough’s altruism, in this instance, he failed the men of his platoon as their leader. Lt. McDonough was aware of the dangers of the ocean, and even after many of the men were reluctant to go on the patrol, he kept pushing in other ways for them to become motivated to go. I think that Lt. McDonough was too focused on contingencies for any attacks by the enemy that he failed to recognize potential threats from the ocean itself. I don’t think if Lt. McDonough went on the patrol to the sea it would have made a difference. Again, the ocean is powerful, and at any moment cant take someone out to sea within minutes. Not even Lt. McDonough can prevent mother nature from running her course. I am a little surprised by the lack of consequences for Lt. McDonough’s actions, but then again I remember that war and the Army were different during these times in regards to certain circumstances.
