I feel that the decision to send his soldiers to the beach was not a bad idea, and I do agree with it. After spending months in nearly constant combat, always worrying if there may be a sniper or the threat of an attack. Lieutenant McDonough was trying to give his soldiers some sort of a relaxation and a release from all of the pent-up stress, frustration and fear. In this situation, I feel as if I would have acted in the same way as Lieutenant McDonough, he tried to come up with contingencies such as sending as many strong swimmers as possible to be at the beach in case anything were to happen. To me, it is more of semantics if Lieutenant McDonough should have gone with his soldiers or not, had he gone the only thing that would have happened is he most likely would have also died attempting to save his soldiers. Had Lieutenant McDonough fallen this would have also been more detrimental to the platoon in the long run. The lack of repercussions does not come as a surprise to me. To place all of the blame on Lieutenant McDonough would be a stretch, and quite frankly, headquarters had more important things to worry about than two accidental deaths because of drowning.
