I believe LT McDonough did the right thing in sending part of the platoon to the beach. I do not believe he made the correct decision in not going. This was a different type of plan and he was putting the lives of his soldiers in the hands of others during a different mission. He needed to be there to ensure his orders were followed and see how this type of plan would be followed through for the others that would come after. He did that when he first arrived to the platoon. He would go out on patrols so he could get a grasp of the land and what type of enemy he was dealing with. While not exactly the same type of situation, he should have gone on the first one. I do think it would have made a difference. I think there may have been more caution while in the water if the LT was there. While reading through the scene of Lt McDonough going to the water and discover what had happened my mind was wondering if he would lose his platoon because of what had happened. I was a bit surprised that there was no mention of any discussion or explanation with the Company or Battalion Commander. I assumed because there was no mention that nothing had happened to the LT. As to why nothing had happened is a mystery to me. The only thing I can think of is that they were in a war and the LTs leadership did not want to deal with it so therefore nothing was done. That type of situation would not surprise me.
