In chapter 22, there were surely some actions that could have been made to make the night link-up go more smoothly. First, LT McDonough could have let 3 PLT know that they were moving toward their position. Whether or not LT McDonough ordered this, it wasn’t mentioned in the chapter, but 3 PLT knew that LT McDonough was moving toward their position eventually. In addition, LT McDonough and 3 PLT could have set pass phrases once LT McDonough was in a position to speak quiet enough for only 3 PLT’s perimeter to hear. Also, LT McDonough could have briefly turned on his strobe in volleys so that the 3 PLT perimeter knew that LT McDonough’s element had arrived. But, more importantly, the RTO and LT Smalley should have been awake, or there should have been someone else on the radio when calls came in. Not only did LT McDonough hale 3 PLT for 30 minutes, but so did CO headquarters. This is simply a lack of leadership and discipline. LT Smalley knew that LT McDonough was moving toward his position eventually and the fact that he decided to sleep instead of wait and prepare for the next operation is quite dumb and dangerous decision. I know I would have been just as livid as LT McDonough, not only because he and Donne were almost killed by fellow Americans, but because LT McDonough has been dealing with garbage peer officers and a virtually useless CO (that he just met not too long ago) the entire deployment. So, with this, the entire gaggle could have had its risk reduced, but it could also have been completely avoided.
