Michael,
Welcome back from the field. I love a point that you made, their success directly contributed to my team’s success. Such a crucial concept that gets missed in too many leadership books. We are only as successful as we allow our teams to be.
As to logistics, I think a key to success is understanding if I don’t have it, where can I get it? How do I get it? As an AMEDD planner, I have to consider 10 primary functions. If I don’t intrinsically provide it how to I get it. Working in a Sustainment Brigade the more successful logisticians think the same way.
As to vehicle maintenance I actually started a reverse triage approach. I have my team think about ease of repair and build a maintenance plan that gets me up quicker. Its tempting to spend hours fixing that one vehicle that needs everything tweaked. But the same time could be spent on several vehicles with minor issues and get them up quickly. More is better. Instead of focusing on the “expectant and urgent” fix the “minimal and delayed”. Clear the queue and then address the challenging vehicles.
