First, welcome to the profession! Being a platoon leader is an awesome experience. You will learn more about the Army in your time as a PL than just about any other assignment. I think its awesome you’re thinking ahead and planning.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, it can be daunting to counsel someone who has so much experience. Its something we all experience and will continue to experience for the majority of our careers. PLs, Staff OIC, Company Commanders we are all paired with an NCO who has literally given their lives to the profession of arms! I believe that the initial counseling can help set the tone for the relationship. I would echo everything the other leaders have posted here.
What I would add is this discussion is this: take your time and prepare for the session. Practice what you want to say, think about what you’re saying and think about the way you want to say it. Its cliche but practice in a mirror. Or make it 21st century and record your rehearsal. Does your body language and voice tone mirror what you’re saying?
Most importantly, I recommend that you make it a conversation. Ask what your PSG needs from you? How can the two of you make an effective team? What expectations does the PSG have of you?
Finally, relax and listen to your platoon sergeant. Feel free to shoot me a message if you want to talk!
