Company Standards
Prior to command, I sat down with my future First Sergeant and developed this company standards document. The intent was to empower junior leaders by laying out the standards and challenging them to enforce the standard. This became a living document, updated when necessary to include addition items and remove irrelevant items.
By design, the document covers a wide range of topics because it is intended as the first read for new Soldiers. Obviously topics such as EO, SHARP, and the FRG had additional policy letters and SOPs for further reading, but Soldier get the gist of the command teams philosophy through this document.
Creating (and sticking to) these company standards was effective at empowering junior leaders to enforce discipline, understand key company processes, and plan accordingly. This document provided junior leaders with the "top cover" they needed to counsel Soldiers that didn't meet the standard expected of them.
Perhaps most importantly, it help First Sergeant and I ensure we were consistent. The standards need to be changed to fit your organization, however, it provides a good basis to build on.
