Jayleene,
Great question. What you do will greatly depend on your unit’s current mission. I’ve been a PL, XO, staff officer, and company commander and all of my jobs differed from what I was taught in school/training to some degree. However, the need to support a team and effectively solve problems were consistent traits requires for all of my…[Read more]

snusom replied to the topic Common mistakes for PT? in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 4 months ago
Pat,
Good question. Add variety and use assessments. First, PT becomes boring and monotonous if you conduct the same events over and over. You won’t see much progress if you don’t vary your program. Second, don’t do PT for the sake of PT. If you want your Soldiers to improve physically, set benchmarks and assess their progress. Don’t let the APFT…[Read more]

Brock,
The Discussion Tags at the bottom of the page are dynamic. It may be the case that “Bug Hunter” is no longer one of the “popular” tags. However, we like your suggestion and have added a link for the Bug Hunter discussion to the More Information column as you suggested. Thanks!

Joe,
You can take this farther than simply “command philosophy,” and put in broader terms as Leadership Philosophy. Attached is mine from when IÂ was a PL (yes, PL). I know not many platoon leaders get this in depth, but from my experience having my philosophy on paper, as something that could be held, looked at and discussed with the Soldiers…[Read more]

A thought; I’m not seeing the BUG HUNTER tag in the “Discussion Tags Area” anymore.
Maybe add a “BUG HUNTER” or maybe a “Submit Forum Feedback” link under the MORE INFORMATION column?

Davis,
That article discusses some pretty relevant traits. Be willing to learn, help the team anyway you can, be a great follower, and remain positive in the most arduous circumstances. @abclark is absolutely right. Your peers will earn your tab for you. In my experience, the individuals who failed their peer evaluations had problems…[Read more]

It might sound over played and a little cliché’, but I’ve always recommended “Starship Troopers” and “We Were Soldiers, Once and Young.” However there is a host that strike at the heart of the warrior like “Gates of Fire,” as well as the “Challenge of Command” to highlight the enormity of some leadership decisions that they might be put in a…[Read more]

@wgandrews , I was looking and saw you were AGR. Excellent! It’s good to see more ARNG Officers on the forum. I’m one of the ARNG/USAR topic leads, so feel free to reach out if you’ve got any questions or concerns.

Thank you Sir for reaching out to me 🙂 I recently came across MILPER Message 17-003 Call to Active Duty Program. I’m an AMEDD Officer so I understand I don’t qualify for this program, but is it possible to apply to the Title 10 AGR program? I want to make the switch from Guard to Reserves.
-
You know what, I haven’t the slightest idea. Does the USAR have a job site like many of our State ARNGs do? I would start there, or even contact a unit that has the branch you’re in and see.
