  • I feel your command philosophy should evolve with experience, even within the same command. Soldiers deserve to be on the same page as us and thus I felt it necessary to update my Command Philosophy and provide it […]

    • Daniel,
      Thanks for sharing!

Is there something in particular that caused you to revise your philosophy? Was it something you did or observed or something your Soldiers did or said?

That’s a good question. I think it was the simple fact that I was welcoming new leaders into the Battery and I had realized that I had in practice expanded on my philosophy, plus the our situation had changed completely. So, I figured I should update it. I also solicited some advice from two trusted SGMs who both indicated that it was very rare for a Commander to update their philosophies. The revisions I made where ideas and practices that my NCOs and I had developed together which has been very successful for us, so it seemed appropriate to put it on paper.

    • CPT Curtis,

You mentioned you spoke with two SGMs who said it was rare for Commanders to update their philosophy. From my very limited perspective, it seems a Commander should be open to revision or updating as he or she encounters new experiences. Did the SGMs give you any insight as to why that is not the norm? Or do you have any personal insights on the matter?
