I am currently a cadet at West Point. Last year, during summer training, I went to Fort Hood, Texas to shadow a platoon leader. This training is called CTLT (Cadet Troop Leadership Training). While I was there, I noticed something that was severely different then West Point; most of the soldiers would not meet the West Point physical fitness standard. During our platoon run, many soldiers fell out while I, a cadet who has average physical fitness at West Point, was not close to gasping for air. It was obvious that the physical aspect of the Army was at a way higher level at West Point. One day, I walked through the company area and noticed that there was physical excellence board. The board recognized the soldiers in the company who performed exceptionally physically. The board recognized soldiers who had and APFT score higher than 250. At West Point, a 250 APFT score would, in some cases, put a cadet into remedial PT. My question through all of this is the same question I asked my platoon leader I was shadowing: Are most soldiers in the Army unfit? and What are actual techniques or workout methods that are efficient in raising soldiers’ PT scores.
