Should you want to be “missed” from your organization after you leave? Why or why not?

I really like this question. As a co cdr, I saw the impact that short-sighted initiatives had on the unit.  As the book  Turn the Ship Around!   shows, this question relates to the fact that many officers (being pessimistic) drive their units to the ground knowing their time is limited.  I agree with leromt who says that one should be missed for their personal impact and not their functional impact.

By asking yourself should you be missed when you leave, one naturally starts to develop a long-term outlook and hopefully plans accordingly.  How will this effect the unit when I’m not here? Are we doing this for the right reasons and how will it effect the organizational climate?
