As an ROTC APMS, my cadets have asked me numerous times about which military books they should read first.  Before any other book, I tell them to read “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie.  My reasoning is that since the Army is a people organization, they truly need to understand how to relate to and influence people (definition of Army Leadership is “the process of influencing people….”).  This book does an excellent job at demonstrating how to master human relations with peers, subordinates, and superiors, during calm and tense situations.  What other books are out that would be great for to cadets and 2LTs to read before arriving to their first units?
