Although Alan is a fantastic writer and outstanding leader, I could not disagree more with his analysis of detailed command and mission command.
First and foremost, “detailed command” is not even a term you will find in ADP 6-0. My belief for the omission of “detailed command” within the ADP is that it harkens to a time of Command and Control…[Read more]

Brock,
Great topic and I appreciate you sharing your story with the forum. Often, especially over the last few years through the Army downsizing, I, as a leader, have not had the personnel or the qualified personnel in positions that are critical to mission success. I do feel that the “buck stops here”, as company level officers we have to coach,…[Read more]

Sweet! Being an XO for an ICTC will be pretty exciting. I’m sure you’ll have a lot of great lessons learned and opportunities to master your understanding of property management. I’d try and get your hands on some property management trackers. Spreadsheet format works well. If you’d like mine from when I was an XO, I can see if I can dig it up. It…[Read more]

George,
Thank you for the feedback. I love your question of how you continue to instill these ideas. Due to the nature of the SF mission, we never deploy as units. We deploy in 1 to 2 man augmentees with an SF ODA Team. Therefore, all of our training revolves around the concept of Soldier X will be one of the only maintenance experts on the…[Read more]

John,
Thank you for the feedback. I think the problem a lot of officers/leaders make is they over complicate things. I cannot be great at everything, but I can try to be a great at a few things. Like I said in my earlier post, my philosophy is my guide. It helps me from going to far off the path.
Also, noticed some grammatical stuff so…[Read more]
