  • I read this article this morning about Out of Office assistant (‘away message ‘, for those of us who’ve used AOL IM).

While the article is short and discussing civilian workplace, I thought it could be a good point of departure for sharing other’s practices.…[Read more]

  • This was posted when I was a month out from PCS.  I’m quite sad that I’m seeing it over a month after my PCS.  I’ll have to dog-ear it for next time!

I’ve been using firefox for this site at work, because … well, Exploder tends to do that. For me, IE doesn’t load the page all the way, there aren’t any boarders, etc. Firefox has been significantly better and loads the interface all the way.

Apparently you can C+P after selecting the TEXT tab (in the text box that you write in to post). You can also write your notes out in WordPad/NotePad and should reduce issues. I see I’m not the only one who pre-writes out my posts!

  • Thanks Sully,

yeah It sure is tough, but when I first arrived I had a sense that the 1SG was not enough involved but not to his fault. I received a lot of email transmissions come across my way, but most was lacking one name on the emails and that was the 1SG. So in my first company meeting I made it mandatory that he is to be on every email…[Read more]

  • Handwritten notes is a brilliant idea. My last BN commander wrote each of his staff members a quick note before our winter block leave, so about 6 months into his command. It was a few sentences, but I knew that multiplied times a few dozen people took him A LOT of time for him to handwrite each one. It was really just SO cool. After I got it,…[Read more]

  • I will preface that this is a very long response.Feel free to send me an email and I’d be willing to talk more over this if that would help.

The very short answer is that people are going to ‘routinely’ get weekend duty. I would expect to get 1-2 weekdays and 1 weekend monthly, depending on your population, mission, and exemptions

  • I’ve just recently PCS’d to the National Guard Bureau (as an Active Component officer), and I’m drinking from the fire hose of a whole new Army experience very different from my Active experiences.  I’ve already spent several days trying to understand the difference between a Date of Rank and an Effective Date of Rank, and it took me several…[Read more]

  • Thank you all for your responses. I did read through all of them. I did have my company meeting last night and I believe it went well. while I did not really do a command philosophy; I did let them know some of my expectations and then went into some talking points that I have been keeping a journal of. I believe I am guiding this company in the…[Read more]

  • Management is definitely a major gap for me.  My last two commands comes down to one very serious problem; “professional development” isn’t a priority from the BN level.  I think I had management at the platoon level down; I’m still figuring out the company command management thing (but I’m getting it I think). However what’s next? The last 2 B…[Read more]

  • Jefferey,

Congratulations! This was something that I spent about a month trying to figure out, basically as soon as I took command right up until the point that I briefed my company for the first time. I guess it included my speech as the incoming commander during the CoC.

I tried to keep with a theme which boiled down to my vision for the…[Read more]

Can’t go past the first page on the topic threads- I click “2”, click “11”, and on the “->” but it only reloads the 1st page of topics. I am on a government computer and on IE, if that matters. 🙂
