I would recommend not talking about MQ vs. HQ in your initial counseling. This is my point of view – but asking your senior rater, “What do I need to do to be a MQ Officer/am I a MQ Officer?” or “What does your rating profile look like?” will not convey your well-meaning intent in your first engagement. Again, this is probably the first time your senior rater has talked to you for a period of time… the number one thing you want to convey (in my opinion) is your ability to be a team player and willingness to learn- in an effort- to be an asset to the team. I recommend being in the receive mode and if given the opportunity to ask questions – think of the way you frame the question to convey confidence but not to the point of self-serving.  There were some good advice from the above comments… glean what makes sense to you and apply it.
