I LOVE this question!
I did a great podcast for The Leader’s Huddle with Micah Klein yesterday and we talked about this very topic. I gave a lot of my perspective on the topic of emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is the capability of individuals to recognize their own and other people’s emotions, discern between different feelings…[Read more]

tiarawalz replied to the topic Lessons you won't learn in BOLC but will still be expected to know in the forum Junior Officer 7 years, 9 months ago
Michael posted such a good list of resources for you! I want to make a suggestion though- learn as MUCH as you can at BOLC! You’re going to be “drinking from the firehose” for a while. Know that you aren’t going to know everything when you get to your first duty assignment. Keeping an open mind and working hard with the suggestions above, on top…[Read more]

Hey Gary!!!
Yep, I already have an RFI with him, haha. I became perplexed when I was writing up my lit review and citing a publication from 2015 that refers to the ATLDP….which looks awesome but I think was only a panel from 2002…I can’t find anything else on it. And it’s on the army mentoring page….so many things floating on the inter webs…[Read more]

Hey team,
I didn’t know this would be so hard for me to find, but what is the current mentorship literature in the military? I am realizing a lot of my sources for a research project are probably outdated. I am not in the “know” these days having been in school for two years so I wanted to hear YOUR thoughts and recommendations on the current…[Read more]

I LOVE this discussion. I always like to bring in business type articles on discussions like this. In my career field, we’ve learned to treat the military much more like a business. The business world consistently incorporates best practices in leadership into their leadership models but the military seems to lag a bit (and of course we have…[Read more]

So, I was going to say exactly what Brock did. How can we improve counseling our Soldiers? DO IT!!
If your leaders do not know where you stand with them, they don’t know where to move.
I have found that leaders tend to make the same excuses as to why they don’t dedicate more time to counseling. Leaders will often shrug off important dates to do…[Read more]

tiarawalz replied to the topic Common mistakes for PT? in the forum Junior Officer 8 years ago
The biggest mistake I see people make with their PT is not teaching their Soldiers how to work out. One of the craziest things we do in the military is run PT programs for Soldiers with no education background in physical fitness, exercise science, or personal training. There is a reason musculoskeletal issues make up the biggest amount of…[Read more]

I love this story!! We plan, we train, we achieve! Isn’t that what our mission is all about? I love using fitness as a tool to watch growth happen across all facets- personally and professionally.

That’s so awesome to hear. I think there is a lot more personal responsibility that has to happen in the Guard. Kudos to you and your leadership for continously seeking out milestones to achieve together, on and off duty. We are better when we suffer together. Or when we exercise together- depending on how you want to look at that, haha!

I have started sharing this graphic with everyone I know, and I bring it up in meetings when I can. W.A.I.T.- Why am I Talking? It’s important to self reflect on what we want to say and why we want to say it. And usually, I can turn this into a point of humor because we all know that guy that talks to much and causes meetings to go waaaaayyy…[Read more]

Here are a couple photos of some of the 40 people who did the race- blue is the full marathon shirt and maroon is the half marathon team shirt. Shirts were DEFINITELY a must have in bonding the team for our common goal. It also told everyone who we were, which motivated people too.

I believe that one of my “strengths” as an Army Officer is that I maintain a high level of physical fitness. I found that running and doing triathlons while in Command inspired me to be a better leader. Physical strength highlights discipline, perseverance, and resiliency. It means you are willing to work hard to achieve a goal. I have found that…[Read more]
