Sir, I think we often overlook the importance of thinking laterally when forecasting our units’ needs. We naturally see the need to nest vertically, but we often neglect to recognize that a critical aspect of vertical nesting is horizontal synchronization to achieve our higher unit’s mission.
I like to think of forecasting for a unit in terms…[Read more]

What could your organization do to add “a little rudder far from the rocks” to prevent needing “a lot of rudder next to the rocks”?
I think instituting a battle rhythm and remaining disciplined to the battle rhythm could go a long way in providing the small course corrections necessary to remain on azimuth. What I oftentimes see is the…[Read more]

Are you asking questions to make sure you know or make sure they know? Why?
I think most of my questions toward my subordinates within my current organization are to make sure my Soldiers know. Soldiers within my section have less than two years time in service with no previous experience in our profession. They are in the early stages of …[Read more]

Brock,
Though I don’t have a wealth of experience with GCSS-A, my initial impressions of the new system are that it has more potential than PBUSE to reduce time wasted on redundant processes.
First and foremost, dispatching procedures show the most promise in terms of minimizing wasted time. We all know that commanders are the final authority…[Read more]

cplenge,
Thank you for sharing this document. I think this is a great way for anyone to get an understanding of what their leaders, peers, and subordinates are thinking. Regardless of rank, one would be remiss to ignore the lessons learned outlined above.

Mr. Laverty,
I agree that you should be good at your job first and foremost. I also agree that if you’re on the line, additional duties are generally more of a distraction rather than an enriching activity. I do think I learned quite a lot from my additional duties, a number of which directly correlate to serious legal repercussions in the…[Read more]

I’ve spent the last few months developing a plan for how to best integrate myself into my new unit. I oftentimes find myself looking back at when I was a 2LT arriving at my first unit and reflecting on what I did well and what I did poorly in my first job as a staff officer. I’d like to share a few of those lessons here in hopes that other people…[Read more]

Just a side-note to this discussion:
In regards to replicating scenarios and consequently getting more buy-in from the XO/S3 to conduct what essentially would become a mini-STAFFEX, I’d recommend using the exercise design and support tools on the G2 OEC website (link: https://tbr.army.mil/index.html). Both of the exercise design tools on TBR…[Read more] -

— Does one mode make a difference over another?
I strongly believe that you should communicate face-to-face as much as possible when talking to your immediate supervisor and when you’re comunicating with your subordinates. When trying to talk to your senior rater and their equivalent or above, I believe you should coordinate with your supervisor…[Read more]
