a good leader may be able to get the job/mission done but may not take into consideration the welfare of his/her soldiers and have little understanding for mishaps. On the other hand, A great leader is able to foster cohesion, emotional intelligence and is able to perform under uncomfortable situations while always keeping safety and welfare of soldiers as priority.
You pointed an interesting problem: how to balance the mission and the welfare of soldiers?I would hope both aren’t antithetical. Sounds like “Mission first, Men always” to me. I guess the distinction shouldn’t be made on the leader himself, rather on his leadership styles. I believe that a good leader (whatever it means) would balance his style based on the situation.
