Who in your organization would answer, “Whatever they tell me to do”? Why?
First I believed that we could hear the phrase “Whatever they tell me to do” from any Soldier within our ranks, Officer, Warrant Officer or Enlisted. Any Soldier that have lost the motivation towards his/her job would probably respond “whatever they told me to do.” Also, those who feel they are macro managed and don’t have the authority to make their own decisions or even provide new ideas. The leader-follower leadership style creates this type of response. Soldiers can get very comfortable with being told what to do all the time, however, not necessarily that means that this is what they want. I am cautious about not creating that type of climate in my company, and I always tell my Soldiers that we have to take responsibility of our actions and also be accountable for the stuff that we see wrong in our organization. There is no time to have only three fully engage Soldiers thinking and making all of the decisions (CDR,1SG, XO) while the rest of the company is on standby waiting for guidance to execute every time. We will be more effective if we can work together to eliminate that type of response and convert the word “they” to “us.”
