The Navy definition and concept of leadership sounds a lot more like “management”. The beginning of the book talks about how empowerment and innovation aren’t necessarily welcome. Naval leaders aren’t really looking for influential thinkers- they’re looking for more of a transactional leader that they can count on to get the job done. It’s all very task-oriented and the book even describes people on the ship being a bit hesitant when given control to make decisions.
Is management a component of leadership? Or is leadership a component of management?
I was surprised when I read the Navy’s definition of leadership! I tried to find an Army definition of leadership pre FM 6-22 but couldn’t. I’m curious to see how far the Army has come.
