Toxic Leadership in the Army
This article presents 18 types of toxic leaders. Which one have you worked with? How was your working relationship with them? For those who are more self-aware, are you slowly turning into one? Read it and share.
As for my opinion, it is true that the Army, with all its wisdom, tends to focus on positive leadership. They mostly preach on the positive qualities that we ought to embody and rarely address the negative ones we need to fix. While this approach may be powerful in building our character as optimistic leaders, it is as important to note and equally beneficial to address what negative leadership looks like. They are everywhere — we’ve worked with them and for them throughout our careers. Yet, we’ve allowed them to rise through the ranks and spread their “toxic leadership” across the force.
If we really want to change for the betterment of our organization, then we need to be realistic and grounded. Identify the source of toxicity and aggressively stop the negativity from influencing others.
