I can only give a small input on regards to this from my experience (although not in command)…while working at the BDE, I made it a point to get into my DCOs (SR) calendar for my initial, after receiving a “verbal counseling, the DCO PCSed  within 3 months. When I tried getting a new SR counseling with the new DCO, my boss said not to worry about it. I was shocked and as an inexperienced junior officer I followed his guidance.

Now that I am at the BN level, the SR has reached out to all of those who she SR and ensured we get in her calendar for initial counseling.

I can honestly say that “it takes 2 to tango”…you should reach out if there is no attempt from their side because their schedule is busy and they can’t always reach out. As they say “you are your best career manager” so it is important to get their guidance, their leadership philosophy and also their vision and intent so you can ensure you are successful as per their guidance.
