Having a “civilian sector background” I can honestly say that “building long lasting relationships” is everything. At a very young age I was taught that when you leave a job, it is best to leave on good terms and living an open door behind you so that if you ever need to go back or need assistance, that door still open and people will take the time to help you.

I would also add that “being in the right place, at the right time, with the right uniform” (or civilian attire) is something I would hold dearly to my heart. This is how you make connections, this is how you get a positive reputation of being involve at work and being reliable.

Lastly, “doing the right thing even when no one is looking” is something I would definitely take with me once I decide to transition out. Sometimes we think that people do not see you or recognize your work or that they are not listening but surprisingly it is the total opposite!
