    As others have brought up, I would strongly recommend you get your Commander’s guidance on awards, and make that a policy letter and or SOP. With this, you’re doing two things; 1) you are making it clear as to what a commander expects from award write ups he/she’s willing to sign, and 2) holding the commander to that same standard for decisions. Because in the end, as stated in 1, it comes down to what they are willing to sign. Are they cool with a couple of minor corrections, or do they need 100% perfection?

    It sucks to say but it’s about constantly having to train and retrain people. As an S1, and even now as a commander, I look at it from the aspect of “if I train them, provide them templates, and examples, it’s easier on me.”

    Attached are the notes I use when writing my own awards, but I do share it with my peers and subordinates in order to get the job done. It allows me to get the grey matter working when I need to come up with something. I’m looking for the red-penned 638 I used to have as a template. As soon as I find it I’ll load it.
