This week’s reading was Daniel Goleman’s 1998 HBR article: What Makes a Leader? You can find the article at the following link: What Makes a Leader?

In class we defined Emotional Intelligence, discussed the five components of Emotional Intelligence, and then briefly discussed possible way to explore developing each of the five components.

    Army Leadership Development Domains
    Army Leadership Development Domains

Above are the Army’s Leadership Requirement Model & the three domains of Army Leadership Development to reference when considering the following questions. You can answer one of these questions or add a question or thought you have about the material.

-Does the Army’s Leadership Requirement Model account for emotional intelligence? If so, where does it fit in? How it could potentially be measured or quantified?</span></span>

-In which domain of Army Leadership Development does the development of emotional intelligence occur? Should the Army incorporate the development of emotional intelligence into its professional military education programs?

-Has your experience as an ROTC cadet helped to develop your emotional intelligence? If so, how? If not, could a change be made to do so?

-ADRP 6-22, Paragraph 1-31 states ‘Leader competence develops from a balanced combination of institutional schooling, self-development, realistic training, and professional experience. Where does the development of a leader’s emotional intelligence fit. What does Mr. Goleman’s suggest in his article?

NOTE FOR NON-SYRACUSE ROTC CADET personnel: We welcome you feedback and input into our discussion. We decided to conduct our discussion here on the JO Forums to incorporate feedback from the active force and other ROTC cadets outside our program. You are welcome to respond to a question from above, respond to Cadet’s post, or post your own observations on the topic. We just ask you that keep your responses professional and remember you are interacting with current ROTC Cadets.
