You can answer one or multiple questions as you reflect on Chapters 5-8:

As LT McDonough assumes command of his Platoon, he quickly makes a series of decisions. How do these decisions effect his standing and place in the Platoon? Do certain decision or events stand out to you more than others?

Are LT McDonough’s actions contrary to what we are typically told about moving slowly when entering a new leadership position? Do you agree with his approach or think he should have conducted himself differently?

How does reflecting on the topics of Emotional Intelligence and Bases of Power we discussed during class last week inform what you observe about LT McDonough’s actions as he assumes command of his Platoon?

In Chapter 7 LT McDonough writes, “The challenge to overcome personal fear is one of the more seductive sirens. It is a deeply internalized struggle. Fear itself is not shameful. In fact, the absence of fear in the face of combat would be a suspicious abnormality of character. The challenge lies in not denying fear, but in being able to function in the face of it.” Does LT McDonough overcome his fear? Can these fears ever be overcome? Is this something future leaders can prepare for? If yes, how?
