Hey all,
I just wanted to pass on this blog post that I wrote about the differences between disruptive and dissonant leadership. I learned an important lesson about this early in my career but wished I had learned it earlier and passed it on to my platoon leaders.
During your time in the Army, you’ll be confronted by a number of challenges and…[Read more]

@lavertym, you’ve hit the nail on the head. We are struggle to develop a holistic approach to reconnaissance and security in the BCT that includes UAS, radar, SIGINT, HUMINT, the Cavalry Squadron, and Battalion scouts. We’re looking everywhere and are seeing trees, but not the forest.
Sounds like you’ve a pretty good grasp on the concept, but if…[Read more]

Scott,
I’m glad you found the post of value. I find I can’t emphasize thee for formations to develop a shared understanding for how they fight enough.
BCTs are currently struggling to embrace the reconnaissance fight as a ‘BCT fight’. For understandable reasons, the BCT Staff devotes a significant amount of time and effort to planning around…[Read more]

I recently wrote a post for From the Green Notebook’s #DAWeek on Cavalry Operations and the need to ‘win the fight to see.’ I’d love to hear the community’s thoughts or opinions and engage further on the subject.

Gents,
I have planned numerous CO STX lanes as an OC/T at the NTC. Feel free to fire away with any questions. I am TDY until Thursday, so I may not be immediately responsive, but am happy to help.

Thanks for the reply. I think you are spot on in your assessment as to where our strengths lie. In the DA OE, none of us are yet experts because we haven’t acquired enough experience training and fighting in it. Time and iterative training are required.
That said, I don’t think that we can wait on time in the field and rotations to CTC to begin…[Read more]

Today I read an article that resonated with my recent focus on the relationships between tactical expertise, incompetence, disciplined self-study, and complacency among tactical leaders. In the article, the author writes that the US Army’s superior power and dominance over the past 70 years has profoundly impacted our culture and the way in which…[Read more]

Thanks for the feedback, as you are driving a great deal of introspection as I attempt to either defend my ideas or embrace a new, more accurate paradigm.
There is a common misconception that by developing graphic control measures and time- or condition-based triggers for the integrated employment of combat power, combined with an expectation of…[Read more]

Brock,
This is a great topic for discussion – thanks for sharing.
We want to lead organizations that are filled to capacity with leaders and Soldiers, to include ourselves, that are subject matter experts in their craft. Yet the reality is that wherever we go, leaders and Soldiers require development and training to achieve that mastery. Â We…[Read more]
