Why Productivity and Time Management are important as a Commander pt2.
This week, I’ll expand on my first point “1. First things first.” In a perfect commander day, (no UCMJ or emergency Soldier issues that requires immediate attention) I first devoted time to my commander’s priorities. I asked my 1SG and myself, are we prepared for the next…[Read more]

If there is one (of many things) I would have told myself in the first 90 days of command, it would have been to prioritize tasks and organize…[Read more]

Chris- I thought you presented great best practices and honest assessments on your experiences managing maintenance, supply, the arms room. If not managed properly, these systems can create problems for any commander.
I like how you emphasized communication and established reporting timelines for your subordinates. Like you said, “don’t expect w…[Read more]

Chris- thank you for sharing you the lessons you’ve experienced early on in your command. I think both are critically important yet, they don’t readily surface as issues.
It’s great that you identified the importance of face-to-face and doing battlefield circulation. This is definitely a consideration for future commanders depending on their…[Read more]

@pstofan, @rakimball, @chris_s – this is great input and advice for others!
I really like the putting 1SG’s sig. block on the Leadership Philosophy. It demonstrates unity, especially if you continually reference it throughout command (as you should). I also think you bring up great questions for reflection that provide a great framework for the…[Read more]

The Modern War Institute (MWI) posted Gen. Thomas’ “13 tips for new lieutenants from the SOCOM commander” (you can find it here: https://mwi.usma.edu/13-tips-new-lieutenants-socom-commander/ ).
While all tips are applicable to leaders at all levels, I was struck by his first tip that discusses an LTs approach to the first meeting with the first…[Read more] -
