I think this is something that the MI Corps has actually done very well. MI BOLC thoroughly integrated MDMP into the branch specific portion of the course and also included a short lesson on design. For many blocks of the course, you would go through MDMP start to finish several times (with an emphasis on mission analysis and IPB) to include b…[Read more]

jrolli replied to the topic Talent Management in technically demanding fields in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 4 months ago
@adam.szczypka, it seems like you are asserting that because Cyber is a “branch” and not a “functional area” that technical competence in the domain is less important than “command” competencies. I would have to bluntly disagree with this dichotomy. I think a Cyber officer cannot be a competent commander without a high degree of technical…[Read more]

jrolli replied to the topic Time Management as an XO in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 6 months ago
I was an XO for an MI company in Germany straight out of BOLC, and the one thing I quickly learned is that sometimes you cannot do everything. The key to succeeding is learning to identify the tasks that (1) you (or your commander) financially, or legally, pay for if you fail, (2) your higher commanders prioritizes, or (3) your Soldiers care…[Read more]

Depending on what kind of a unit he’s in, he could try generating a discussion about what core tasks for the unit aren’t utilized/practiced during their deployment. In essesnce, if the US declared war on a near-peer nation-state tomorrow, what tasks would your unit be expected to execute that you are not prepared to do?
Having witnessed this…[Read more]

jrolli replied to the topic Stretching Scarce Resources (April 2018 JO Jam) in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 7 months ago
Communicating with higher has always the most effective part for me when managing scarce resources. The other options are important and generally need to be understood before talking to higher, but much of managing scarce resources (especially time) comes from truly understanding your higher headquarter’s intent and priorities. If you go to h…[Read more]

jrolli replied to the topic What's it like to work with Warrant Officers? in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 7 months ago
My first experience with WOs was as XO for an MI company while a 2LT. We had about a dozen warrants in my company (WO1 to CW4), and I also dealt with the battalion maintenance officer (CW2) and the brigade property book officer (CW3) on a regular basis. While I had some bad experiences with one individual, they have generally been outstanding p…[Read more]

jrolli replied to the topic Perceptions of Army Cyber – Potential Disconnect in the forum Junior Officer 7 years, 8 months ago
Davbro,
As a cyber officer, I can say we are disconnected from the rest of the Army and even other cyber elements. Geography, classification rules, and mission sets all contribute to this.
My best recommendation on bridging the gap for you would be to learn doctrinal terms and symbology (ADRP 1-02). While we tend to use civilian s…[Read more]
