Good question… for work, mostly a variety of plans. Personally, I have two in the chute: “How the Gloves Came Off: Lawyers, Policy Makers, and Norms in the Debate on Torture” by Elizabeth Grimm Arsenault and “How Statesmen Think: The Psychology of International Politics” by Robert Jervis

brock.j.young started the topic Leadership Assignment Selection – How are they selected? How do you prepare? in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 2 months ago

Vanezza, nathan.a.wike’s answer is excellent.
I will ADD this: understand your boss’ intent and execute that first in all things. occasionally ask for intent, but you will see it in orders, and just be able to read him or her. Most of my sit-downs with senior raters have been job interviews.
If you are INTERVIEWING for a position (or future p…[Read more]

Vanezza, nathan.a.wike’s answer is excellent. IÂ will add this to it: understand your boss’ intent and execute that first in all things that come down. occasionally ask for the intent, but after a while you will see it in orders, and just be able to read him or her.

this is very interesting – always interested in the counter-recon fight. I get to see orders specify essential tasks for recce not to get decisively engaged. how do you bridge that gap between recce, and other enablers that assist the infantry set the conditions for combined arms maneuver? I like the hunter-killer concept post screen phase, and…[Read more]

Vanessa,
I think Brock hit the nail on the head. Ask him what is a MQ officer? The next question you need to ask is , “Am I a MQ officer?” Now, your senior rater will not be able to answer that at your initial counseling, but I would ask that question every time afterwards. It is an incredibly difficult question to ask, but we as leaders get paid…[Read more]

Vanessa, sorry for piling on late. I brough a senior rater philosophy to my organization. If its not too late, ask what the SR philosophy is. In my case it had more to deal with team work, innovation, and ability to grow. Things like APFT and performance were expected.
If you’d like a copy of mine, I can zip it your way.
