Tiara,
Most ARNG/USAR units find they have issues with this sort of thing from time to time, and that is absolutely the reason. With ARNG/USAR Soldiers, you don’t have someone who is able to commit to the military 100% of the time. The very same thing that is ARNG/USAR’s greatest strength and makes “us” a favorite of deployed commanders, is also a…[Read more] -

This are examples of how I started a marathon/half-marathon training team with my Soldiers while I was in Command in Fort Benning, GA, 2014.

Here are a couple photos of some of the 40 people who did the race- blue is the full marathon shirt and maroon is the half marathon team shirt. Shirts were DEFINITELY a must have in bonding the team for our common goal. It also told everyone who we were, which motivated people too.

I believe that one of my “strengths” as an Army Officer is that I maintain a high level of physical fitness. I found that running and doing triathlons while in Command inspired me to be a better leader. Physical strength highlights discipline, perseverance, and resiliency. It means you are willing to work hard to achieve a goal. I have found that…[Read more]

Heather,
I try to rotate between history/military, current events, and leadership but I tend to gravitate towards books that focus on leadership and leader development. My last two books were George Marshall: A Biography by Debi and Irwin Unger and Start With Why by Simon Sinek (both gifts from a mentor). I highly recommend both! I am currently…[Read more]

Thanks for the response and I agree. Although I think an effective LPD program requires both, I also believe units focus more on training and less on development. I wonder if this imbalance occurs because defining an end state or an assessment is easier for leader training and more difficult or ambiguous for leader development.

Brock, do you find your unit has a lot of issues with this? Is it possible that there are those Soldiers who don’t have those kind of time commitments? I know next to nothing about the culture surrounding the Guard/Reserves but it would be my hope that Soldiers have a sense of pride and respect for their unit that they would WANT to help out. I…[Read more]

Paul,
This is the troop to task that I used when I was a PL. It is color coded and is easy to brief.
Let me know if this helps.

heather.mcateer replied to the topic What are units doing to inform soldiers of the new retirement? in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 4 months ago
Justin,
Great question and speaks to larger issue of staying informed of policy changes. Good commands and staffs will keep leaders at all levels informed and arm them with tools, but it’s good to stay ahead of the bow wave when things get lost in the noise. I’ve found that subscribing to list-servs and professional forums (like this!!) helps…[Read more]

Ray,
Honestly, if it affects unit readiness then leaders have to at least acknowledge it. Joes who can’t feed their kids, or pay their rents, or owe predatory loan companies, take time, energy, and man-hours from maintaining unit readiness and training levels. The AC is lucky in that they “own” their Soldiers and can take direct action, direct…[Read more]
