I would argue that meetings at both levels exist to ensure units stays proactive, identify potential friction points, and validate systems. At the same time, we all have information requirements to our higher headquarters and meeting with subordinate units help facilitate that flow of data. Effective meetings encompass all of the above.

@patrick-d-moore1, you bring up a great point about leaders modeling responsible on-line behavior. I couldn’t believe all the blatant and disrespectful posts made by some military leaders during the last election cycle. If we (leaders) are posting inappropriate or unprofessional content, how can we expect our Soldiers to act any differently? And I…[Read more]

The Marines United Facebook scandal brings to light a contemporary problem all branches of the U.S. military must face: what responsibilities do military leaders have within the sphere of social media?
As junior leaders, we are the ones who are around Soldiers on a daily basis. What responsibilities should junior leaders reasonably have in…[Read more]

snusom replied to the topic What interesting things have you done to maintain or improve morale? in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 3 months ago
Great topic! I will offer two things I did as a commander. First, we did a troop-level dining out, which took dedicated planning and coordination but the Soldiers and their families really enjoyed the event. We were fortunate to conduct the dining out a few months after returning from a deployment, so it gave us a chance to recognize outgoing le…[Read more]

It’s a little off topic, but one of the best ways I’ve found to stay intellectually stimulated is to write. Writing forces you to reflect on what you’ve read and your experience. Throughout the process you’ll find yourself developing and challenging your own thoughts, which then encourages you to research additional information to expand your…[Read more]

gary.m.klein replied to the topic Leader Development Versus Leader Training in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 3 months ago
I absolutely agree that there is a difference between “leader training” and “leader development.” A former CALDOL friend of mine defined these two “categories” as leader development (i.e. skills development) and leadership development (developing your actual ability to lead). I also agree with most of the discussions here that many units spend s…[Read more]
