brock.j.young replied to the topic Command Philosophy in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 2 months ago
Joe,
You can take this farther than simply “command philosophy,” and put in broader terms as Leadership Philosophy. Attached is mine from when I was a PL (yes, PL). I know not many platoon leaders get this in depth, but from my experience having my philosophy on paper, as something that could be held, looked at and discussed with the Soldiers…[Read more]

The attached class is for an LPD class, given to NCOs and Officers in a National Guard BN. It is a basic class that can be taught in 30-45 minutes by a half-way knowledgeable instructor. It is broke down into se […]

A thought; I’m not seeing the BUG HUNTER tag in the “Discussion Tags Area” anymore.
Maybe add a “BUG HUNTER” or maybe a “Submit Forum Feedback” link under the MORE INFORMATION column?

brock.j.young replied to the topic Books every cadet and 2LT should read in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 2 months ago
It might sound over played and a little cliché’, but I’ve always recommended “Starship Troopers” and “We Were Soldiers, Once and Young.” However there is a host that strike at the heart of the warrior like “Gates of Fire,” as well as the “Challenge of Command” to highlight the enormity of some leadership decisions that they might be put in a…[Read more]

When putting together evaluations for your NCOs, you want to make them as doctrinal as possible to ensure they’re progressing and are rated by the same standards as other NCOs across the NCO Corps. In order to […]

@wgandrews , I was looking and saw you were AGR. Excellent! It’s good to see more ARNG Officers on the forum. I’m one of the ARNG/USAR topic leads, so feel free to reach out if you’ve got any questions or concerns.

Thank you Sir for reaching out to me 🙂 I recently came across MILPER Message 17-003 Call to Active Duty Program. I’m an AMEDD Officer so I understand I don’t qualify for this program, but is it possible to apply to the Title 10 AGR program? I want to make the switch from Guard to Reserves.
-
You know what, I haven’t the slightest idea. Does the USAR have a job site like many of our State ARNGs do? I would start there, or even contact a unit that has the branch you’re in and see.

brock.j.young replied to the topic Counseling your PSG in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 2 months ago
This topic was actually the one that drove me to the forums originally. Though I was a PSG at one point, I was never counseled as one. So when I was about to take a platoon, I wanted to do it right.
Like @logisticus mentioned, I would come at it like a two way conversation. Not only should you lay out your expectations and specify any areas of sp…[Read more]

So this just happened. Walked through the door, finally home from our EXCELLENT Rendezvous weekend, and get hit with an activation alert; “report to the Armory and be prepared to support emergency relief operations, vicinity Oroville Damn and downstream. Compromise of damn likely.”
THIS is why I joined the Guard.
