In talking about social media, I think it’s important to note which perspective we are speaking from.
For me, social media is a double edged sword. I run the Clinical Support Division at Evans and we are currently in tough times as we turned off enrollment for our retirees and folks retiring off Active Duty. We have to make room for an incoming…[Read more] -

tiarawalz replied to the topic How do you stay healthy? in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 11 months ago
Staying healthy for me usually involves signing up for a race of some kind to keep me motivated and focused on a goal. I have gotten Soldiers, Peers, and Coworkers to do some of these races with me too. It’s a lot of fun. Even when organized PT may disappear from the picture, working out is still a huge way to build teamwork, camaraderie, and…[Read more]

As an Officer, I have always strived to lead from the front in terms of physical fitness. I believe that the discipline to stay physically fit can be modeled in other facets of our lives as well. Physical fitness is extremely important in the military, and I don’t believe you can preach that unless you are modeling it. I was always out at PT with…[Read more]

tiarawalz replied to the topic Was Company Command/First Sergeant Course worth it? in the forum Junior Officer 7 years, 1 month ago
Yes, it is absolutely worth attending. It’s important to have relationships with your installation entities so that they’re at your service to help out, and vice versa. Having good relationships with ACS, Family Advocacy, and Legal during my Command time was incredibly valuable to my success. Even if you can’t pay attention 100% to the death by…[Read more]

This speaks to my OCD! Haha. Thank you for sharing that article. I LOVE batching my time. I am SO much more productive and it really motivated me just to set up the plan/schedule to do it.
I always believed that personnel actions needed to be something you closed out with at the end of each day (whenever possible). I will NEVER forget the time…[Read more]

tiarawalz replied to the topic Leadership Topic Lead Introduction in the forum Junior Officer 7 years, 1 month ago
One of the things I was most excited about as a Company Commander was the impact I could make on my Soldiers. How could I best serve them, and help them to achieve the most in their careers during that time? Most of us know as JOs that we want to command. We all have experiences with Commanders that help mold who we do (and do not) want to be as a…[Read more]

- How do you communicate the impact of overload to higher? Frank discussion. Quantify your points- why it’s too much, and develop a potential plan to address them. It is important to be transparent with your senior leaders. BUT- you must be truthful in your analysis and prioritization of tasks. You can’t just complain that you’re stressed.…

Leaders coming into a new organization are counting on their leaders (including Junior Officers) to prepare them for their new job. It is our responsibility to prepare some sort of welcome brief for our new boss. New leaders in a new unit should be briefed on your roles and responsibilities, your capabilities, unit strength, what your mission is,…[Read more]

TRICARE Changes effect me the most because I am a healthcare administrator. I am running the TRICARE “Take Command” Marketing Campaign for Fort Carson and the Colorado Springs Military Healthcare System beneficiaries- I should craft a post for this forum to highlight those changes for everyone. Rest assured, the TRICARE benefit will NOT change. We…[Read more]

Can’t go past the first page on the topic threads- I click “2”, click “11”, and on the “->” but it only reloads the 1st page of topics. I am on a government computer and on IE, if that matters. 🙂

I LOVE these ideas! I especially like the idea of hand written notes and homemade food/potlucks. It speaks volumes to thank someone specifically on how they’ve impacted the organization. Meaningful versus generic goes a long way. Giving thanks and showing appreciation should be a part of every Leader’s personal battle rhythm.

tiarawalz replied to the topic Your Biggest Knowledge Gap (August 2017 JO Jam) in the forum Junior Officer 7 years, 7 months ago
I think Management was my biggest gap as a junior Officer. As a senior CPT, we are expected to be proficient in our leadership style and how we manage teams. I think we could do a much better job to ensure that senior CPTs and junior field grades do feel more confident in their management style. I’ve been in the military over 8 years now and still…[Read more]

Coins are awesome.
This is cool too though 🙂
Giving people something to invest in and be proud of is also valuable to camaraderie and mission success.

Jkramer0309- I would not underestimate your platoon meal celebrations or see them as a small gesture. That is HUGE for people. Bringing in lunch speaks volumes because you’re showing your Soldiers that you care about them. And food speaks to everyone’s hearts. You wouldn’t believe how many people stop me in the hospital and ask where I’m going…[Read more]

When you use the search function (ie I used it to look for code words to make sure I wasn’t duplicating a topic discussion), it pulls up topics and says they don’t have any “likes” or “comments”. I thought none of those topics by JOs had been answered by anyway. Turns out, they DO have replies- those numbers just aren’t showing under the search…[Read more]
