Logisticus – thank you for the great input. You mentioned some golden nuggets in here that I forgot to mention that I wish I would have done prior to taking the guidon.
1. An organized property book, hand-receipts etc are definitely critical. Do this to save yourself pain and time in the long run folks! I could have done better.
2. Company S…[Read more]

Tiara,
Thank you so much for mentioning your vision and philosophy for command. I really liked your emphasis on volunteering outside of work. That is awesome. Are there any key components of your vision and philosophy that rang especially true or applicable in regards to leadership? You mentioned caring, and creating opportunities; how did…[Read more]

I’m curious – how do people use these resources in the execution of their TM responsibilities in their organization?
Do you take notes on your Soldiers after having a “personal relationship” conversation with them? Do you pass around “TM books” or hold a “LPD book club”? Do you talk about articles discussed in “professional affiliations”…[Read more]

Cale,
Awesome! Congrats on the command, and thank you so much for all of your contributions and leadership. I’m sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I will send you a message soon so that we can talk over the phone or via e-mail if that is okay? You are welcome, as you have already so many times, to post your experiences, and I…[Read more]

Congratulations! You’re just been assigned to Staff and are starting to crank away on your new job – new tasks to learn, new people to meet. But, then you start to see a small divide, a difference in the way that you’re instructed to treat your Battalion versus how to treat your Soldiers. Maybe it is when the BN is released early, but your…[Read more]

Hello, Staff leaders! My name is Mandi and I’m the new lead for the Staff Community. I’m incredibly excited and honored to step into this role.
As an AG officer, I have spent most of my career on staff at various unit levels, and for most of that time, this space here that you’re reading this on, this staff community, didn’t exist! That d…[Read more]

Something I have not seen mentioned yet (from myself included) is battle rhythm. For sure get that from the RIP, predecessor, or NCOIC. While you get your feet under you, you can at the very least nail the easy stuff and get “brownie points” for taking care of the meetings and facetime that you reasonably should be nailing.
I also saw NTC…[Read more]

Philip thank you for comment. You mention “counseling your NCOs and working much harder on CSDP.”
Prior to taking command, what would you recommend future CDRs do in regards to these tasks? Do you believe these take priority over other preparation tasks? Obviously time being the most important factor.
You bring up a great point. I agree with th…[Read more]

@brock.j.young – I think you bring up great points and lessons learned for future commanders to reflect upon!
1. I like how you were a sponge collecting all information prior to assuming command. I think your reflection prior to assuming command was a great way to frame your approach.
2. “My Leadership Philosophy became the foundation of my comm…[Read more]

And it happened. You were selected to be a company commander in the United States Army. Perhaps you knew it was going to happen. Maybe you didn’t. You may call your loved ones to share the good news or tell your buddies. Maybe you have 30 days until change of command or perhaps it is a year. Everyone’s timing is different but one issue remains c…[Read more]
