I’ve had the honor of working closely with 2 WO (AG – CW3, CW2) and knowing many within the MI world. First thing I tell them when I introduce my self is ” as a Junior Officer I am hungry for knowledge so I will apologize in advance if I asked 1,001 questions”. They are by far the most knowledgeable individuals who give you the good, the bad and…[Read more]

Leadership, what a loaded word. As junior officers the Army expects us to do it. As I think back to my OCS experience there is a lot about the day to day leading of soldiers that just doesn’t get covered.
I wish I had learned more about how to mentor soldiers. My job isn’t just about leading a mission but also about growing the soldiers I le…[Read more]

First, welcome to the profession! Being a platoon leader is an awesome experience. You will learn more about the Army in your time as a PL than just about any other assignment. I think its awesome you’re thinking ahead and planning.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, it can be daunting to counsel someone who has so much experience. It…[Read more]

Alrighty…time for my FRG Hat!
As an FRG leader right now, the best thing I received from my predecessor was the leader continuity book. Ours includes the IRS establishment letter, account access memos from the previous and present commander, Assumption of Command orders, position assignment MFRs, and monthly audits for the account from the…[Read more]

Warrant Officers…they’re an officer who has been around the Army for multiple decades, has spent time usually in at least two rank structures (almost always enlisted, sometimes as a commissioned officer too), and sometimes even in multiple Components (USAR, ARNG, RA).
A Warrant Officer (WO) doesn’t quite fill the role of a Commissioned Officer…[Read more]

chofusionism Thank you for the question, I believe this is such an important question specially for new PL as well as new BN staff (BN S1 can be OIC and will have an NCOIC that will need to be counseled).

Team —
As part of the prepping and winning the first 90 days of command, this post will discuss building momentum in your FRG. Is your FRG involved and do your Soldier’s families know about upcoming events? It is safe to say that having an effective FRG can help your command. This post will discuss 1) FRG principles and considerations, 2)…[Read more]

@pstofan, @rakimball, @chris_s – this is great input and advice for others!
I really like the putting 1SG’s sig. block on the Leadership Philosophy. It demonstrates unity, especially if you continually reference it throughout command (as you should). I also think you bring up great questions for reflection that provide a great framework for the…[Read more]

There is a strong connection between the discipline found in an organization and how the organization establishes productive norms for giving and receiving criticism. Great post!
Establishing a culture of discipline can take different actions at Company Level and Platoon Level or in different types of units. This post discusses discipline at the…[Read more]
