Chad,
I don’t know why it has to “center” around booze, however as adults, supposed professionals and leaders, shouldn’t we be allowed the option? Like I said, it’s all training. How can you expect someone to pick you a rifle and qualify unless they’re trained? Same with professional, social interactions. If all a young leader’s experience when…[Read more]

@vanezzaospina, @adam.szczypka
We (my BDE) are trying the who weekly FRAGORD thing, and it’s a nightmare. From my observations it’s been completely reactive and inefficient. BNs to BDE “So you’re telling me to do something TODAY, that will be in a FRAGORD Friday?” BDE response, “Exactly.”
It might be a little different since we’re a Guard…[Read more]

CPT Brenton Clark, B/2-1 IN Company Command Interview
CPT Brenton Clark leads B/2-1 IN, a Stryker company, and works with a “young 1SG [who] is very technically proficient (creator of Ranger School Professional app).” Coming from a “light” background, he quickly sought out a young Soldier to share his vehicle and equipment expertise. I’ve always liked the idea. The most worthwhile mentorship I ever received was was over a couple of beers with some candid conversation. However I also have seen the steady decline of these things as @adam.szczypka mentioned. “Leaders” these days point to the ever present specter of SHARP when they outlaw these types of gatherings, choosing…[Read more]

Brother, every organization is unique… so on and so forth, disclaimer, disclaimer, disclaimer.
Now, down to business. Yes, you should be planning your calendar a full fiscal quarter in advance. Yes, you should be “locking” your calendar 6-8 weeks in advance. Then (optional – my personal technique), you should go nuclear when there are changes…[Read more]

Team,
To be real, #realtalk, I don’t spend all of my free time on JOF, but I do spend lots (probably too much) of my free time on the internet. The term “influencers” is big in recent years as social media has… meh… too much. We’ll leave it at this: It’s not new. Joseph Klapper (sp?) turned the phrase with his work on “mass communication”…[Read more]

Master Outlook Calendar and Notebook.
Like brock.j.young mentioned,  I first obtain the master outlook calendar from the higher (battalion etc). In a perfect world, the master outlook calendar is controlled by the S-3 shop and can adequately drive the battle rhythm for “higher events.” I ensure that my major company events are on that calen…[Read more]

I’m in the middle of my second M-day company command. The key to success is engagement and thinking ahead. You need to start with what you need to accomplish at annual training upfront and then backward plan your MUTAs. I always have a sacrifice training event set aside to cut in the event of last minute taskers from higher. Typically your XO…[Read more]

There was a great post on this very topic by @X70037,  https://juniorofficer.army.mil/personal-battle-rhythm/.
Personally I use a mix of three primary things that help keep me on track.
First, outlook. It’s great for those reoccurring meetings, things sent from “higher,” things I can link to my cell calendar, etc.
Next, I have my white board f…[Read more]

Unfortunately what I’ve seen teach JOs (to include myself) to plan has been experience; in all its cruel and drinking from a fire hose form. Counseling is hard. Sitting in front of someone and telling them that they aren’t cutting it, is harder. You don’t want to be “mean,” right? What’s the worst that can happen? (he asked rhetorically…)
The National Guard utilizes an order of merit list method (OML) for promoting NCOs, based on a point calculation (from 0 to 800). This differs…[Read more]
