fightingengineer replied to the topic Command of a Headquarters? in the forum Junior Officer 5 years, 2 months ago
I’ll take a stab at this. Some context, I did not command an HHC. I commanded an AIT company that based on what I know had some HHC characteristics. I had an instructor population (~40-50 SSGs and SFCs) whom I had under my command, but were outside of my rating influence, effectively (I was their supplementary reviewer).

@jared.kobylski, this requires a few steps. The Engineer Qualification Tables (EQTs) have jumped around in different publications in the eight years I’ve been in.
If you look at the Engineer School Knowledge Network (ESKN @ https://www.ako1.us.army.mil/suite/grouppage/17137), in the Frequently Asked Questions, the EQTs are now located in the…[Read more]

I would say that Game of Thrones has many valuable lessons to be learned. Very often, the show juxtaposes very different Leaders and the consequences of their choices.
Specifically, The Battle of the Bastards shows a good juxtaposition between Ramsay Bolton and Davos Seaworth while they make decisions on whether to fire arrows (ah yes, an i…[Read more]

fightingengineer replied to the topic SFRG is the new FRG in the forum Junior Officer 5 years, 5 months ago
This is an interesting change. I apologize, I will probably get off-topic, but it is what it is.
I think the SFRG will still likely be inspected during OIP inspections, as there is a lot of risk involved when you talk about money.
About two years ago, the installation I was stationed at took a major look at (then) FRGs and fundraising. The issue…[Read more]

fightingengineer replied to the topic What are good engineering themed books to read for Engineer officers? in the forum Junior Officer 5 years, 5 months ago
I’m not an avid reader, but here are some options (these are not all strictly books):
–Â Engineer – The Professional Bulletin of Army Engineers (https://home.army.mil/wood/index.php/contact/publications/engr_mag). This is an important one. When you go to EBOLC, you will see this magazine in the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence (MSCoE)…[Read more]

fightingengineer replied to the topic How to prepare for company command in the forum Junior Officer 5 years, 6 months ago
What a great post! My thoughts are:
How did you prepare for company command? I trusted my training and had an open mind. Yes, PME has gaps, and CCC is not really structured to teach you how to be a commander. But think of all the development you’ve received over the years. All the counselings (hopefully), all the training, these are the things…[Read more]

The organization I am in is an interesting one. My current position has no supervisory requirements, that said, it allows me to look around the organization and understand why things are happening.
-Who is the next person who’s going to leave your organization because they’re underappreciated? My current organization is experiencing an exodus of…[Read more]

fightingengineer started the topic Military Housing in the forum Junior Officer 5 years, 8 months ago
Most of us have probably been part of the on-going conversation about the state of military housing. I wanted to try and put together some of my thoughts and hear about experiences and recommendations others have on the subject to help provide useful discussion at the Town Halls occurring across the Army.
My background: I currently live on-post…[Read more]

fightingengineer replied to the topic Turn the Ship Around! Week 2 Discussion in the forum Junior Officer 5 years, 9 months ago
@charles.hood I’ll echo your comments on “whatever they tell me to do”. There is a difference between disciplined initiative (also disciplined disobedience, see GEN Milley’s comments on that matter) and insubordination. For this argument, I think you need to neglect orders that are illegal or immoral, for a moment.
There have been more than a…[Read more]

fightingengineer started the topic The Military Move in the forum Junior Officer 5 years, 9 months ago
We all end up conducting a military move, at one point or the other, in our time in the Army. I’m sure you’ve all heard good and bad things about PCS moves, this post isn’t meant to be a complaining session, rather one to provide some insight if your move doesn’t go the way you planned. This post will mainly focus about claims for damages and…[Read more]

fightingengineer started the topic Unit Commander Financial Report in the forum Junior Officer 5 years, 10 months ago
Does anyone have any recent, good guides or how-to’s for the unit commander financial report (UCFR)?
A long story short, while I was in command, I was never able to complete a UCFR. It’s a monthly requirement, much like the AAA reports, to certify the report for your Soldiers. While I was never able to see an actual report, I believe it will…[Read more]

fightingengineer replied to the topic Tips and Tricks in Dealing with GCSS-Army (GCSS-A) in the forum Junior Officer 5 years, 10 months ago
Brock,
I’ll echo Rose’s mention of how GCSS-Army assists in the dispatching process. You can also use it to digitally sign licenses, which is a time investment up front, but helps cut down on Soldiers’ losing theirs and you having to resign them.
A frustration I had was the way computer monitors and televisions are accounted for. For most TVs…[Read more]

fightingengineer replied to the topic Leading Civilians (October 2018 JO Jam) in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 1 month ago
@brock.j.young, I concur with your assessment about the “forgetting who you work for”. While the Army does serve the American people, this doesn’t mean that we serve the DA Civilians who work in our organizations, at least in the sense of exercising our official duties together. There are military personnel (me, for instance) who are rated by DA…[Read more]

fightingengineer replied to the topic Is Senior Rater Counseling a solution to the Army’s Toxic Leadership problem? in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 1 month ago
Senior Rater Counseling is very important, make no mistake. However, I have only received one once, when I was in company command. One could argue that this is probably the most important time to receive one though, since company commanders are very influential. The counseling was not written, nor supported by anything concrete. Words and…[Read more]

I’ve never been a staff OIC, nor worked in an S1 shop. However, my time as an AIT commander was very much impacted by the S1 shop. I’m not sure if it is a systemic issue for AG MOS’s, but our S1 personnel were not cutting it, either.
As you’ve seen, patience was mentioned above. I would also encourage this, while also providing counseling,…[Read more]
