This decision will be made a little easier once you’ve become an Armor officer and you get a sense of what the branch entails and if you want to continue in that branch. Which of those two branches matches up with your professional and personal passions? I’d follow my passion. I would say that it also depends on your career goals. Do you plan to…[Read more]

Chad,
Great article. As a “Boomer”, I did not truly appreciate this point of view while I was serving. However, I wished that I had.One thing that it causes me to ponder, though, is the old adage, “If you want to be a good leader, you need to be a good follower.” In my day, “good followers” didn’t question their leaders as to the…[Read more]

@gwrunkleiv: George, thank you for this. Deciding to share this story must have been difficult but all of us here in Junior Officer will learn something from it. I truly appreciate your candidness and your willingness to share the lessons you learned.

Should you want to be “missed” from your organization after you leave? Why or why not?
BLUF:Â I’d like to be missed on both the personal and professional side, but I don’t want to be missed functionally.
Everybody wants to be liked, appreciated, and missed when they aren’t there (right?). On the personal side, I’m no different. I’d lik…[Read more]

Can you turn the “P” in LPD into “Personal” and do the dog-tag exercise, or perhaps the Great Teams exercise? This would help with team building and personal connections. Just a thought.

As an NCO for close to 10 years and then an officer for 16 more, here is my take:
1. As @Lucas.v.hobbs mentions, as an NCO I wanted to be “friends” with my lieutenant/captain but to me that meant having a friendly/joking working relationship. I did not expect to be friends that went to dinner together or spent time at each other’s house. I jus…[Read more]

Dallas,
I believe your response appeared at the bottom because you “quoted” the reply you responded to rather than “replied.” I know that sounds odd but that’s what appears to be happening. When I press “reply” to a sub-reply, the reply box opens directly under the one I’m responding to, however, if I press “quote”, I’m taken all the way to the…[Read more] -

I found that I understood the things I needed to do, I just couldn’t figure out an optimal battle rhythm in which to get them all accomplished. Â My lack of knowledge on how to manage my time was a huge distractor for me.

Josh,
Typically, you are authorized travel time, mileage, and per-diem from your home of record. Â However, because of your TDY, you may not receive the travel time, but, you should still receive at least the mileage and per diem. Â It’s best to check with the transportation office where you are to confirm. Â In the meantime, here is a link that mi…[Read more]

Micah,
Some good stuff on your document, a few of them I did not think about when I made my 3 DITY moves.
One other thing I would add is to make sure you have a load plan. Â For example, I did not plan to unload EVERYTHING the first day we arrived so I made sure that I loaded some things last, like the kid’s bed stuff, pet supplies, some pots…[Read more]
