Steve,
Thanks for responding. I certainly understand the scenario you’ve laid out. There are always seasons where a CO CDR does not control his/her training calendar, primarily from PLT- to BDE-level collective training. Strictly in my opinion, I believe CO CDRs should own their training plans (and certifications) through SQD-level. Unfortunately,…[Read more] -

A lot of great techniques/ideas on counseling. I am late to the conversation, but I do want to add one technique that was valuable for me as a commander. As Gary points out in the above post, providing questions in advance is important for an effective counseling session. Taking the advice of a mentor, the last question I always asked on the…[Read more]

Following completion of company command, I started a humble blog aimed toward military leader development: http://www.3x5leadership.com.
I am currently working on / publishing a 12-part “Company Command Series” oriented on sharing specific lessons from my experience and certain “how to” methods for different systems (training management, policy letters,…[Read more]

gary.m.klein replied to the topic What is the CURRENT mentorship doctrine? in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 2 months ago
Tiara:
The only doctrine that I’m aware of that relates to mentorship is our 6-22 series of leadership doctrine (ADP, ADRP, and FM). In terms of regulations, I’m not aware of any requirements.
I would ask @rakimball. He’s the best mentorship SME I know.

To echo what most have said already, recording the session is important, but the most important part is the conversation. Make an effort to get the counselled individual to share their perspective as well.
One good way to do this is to share some questions in advance that you want to discuss during the counseling. This can be in regard to their…[Read more]

I agree with some of the other contributors who mention the need to model proper behavior. We need to be weary of the idea that we (leaders) can chose to not participate or ignore social media and just avoid the problem all together.
Although not everyone will be interested, I personally share my opinions on how to use social media as a…[Read more]

Alan,
As a former troop commander I really appreciated reading your article. In our effort to regain proficiencies in security and reconnaissance tasks, we can’t ignore our ability to fight. I think your points about mastering actions on contact and battle drills are spot on. Hopefully as we continue to emphasize reconnaissance operations against…[Read more]

Vanezza,
Ray and Brock both brought up excellent points. A fun/different way of approaching this question would be to ask your Senior Rater , using five single works, what qualities he/she expects of a junior officer. This is a unique way of asking about his/her expectations of you, IMHO. Good luck!

snusom replied to the topic Getting the Most Out of Meetings (March 2017 JO Jam) in the forum Junior Officer 8 years, 3 months ago
I would argue that meetings at both levels exist to ensure units stays proactive, identify potential friction points, validate systems, and drive decision making. At the same time, we all have information requirements to our higher headquarters and meeting with subordinate units help facilitate that flow of data. Effective meetings encompass all…[Read more]
