Is this the article you were referring to?
http://www.benning.army.mil/armor/eARMOR/content/issues/2016/APR_JUN/2Klein-Hastings16.pdf
If so, I’m struggling to find exactly what makes that article
dissonantdisruptive. I see unit names not explicitly connected with “resounding success”, but isn’t that what makes a detailed analysis useful? -

Ray,
I agree completely that management is a crucial skillset for officers. Personally, I always viewed anytime I was on staff or acting as a staff officer I was operating as a manager. Focused on helping the Commander realize their vision.
I think a strength of the officer corps is the balance we attempt to make between time spent in…[Read more]

— Does one mode make a difference over another?
I strongly believe that you should communicate face-to-face as much as possible when talking to your immediate supervisor and when you’re comunicating with your subordinates. When trying to talk to your senior rater and their equivalent or above, I believe you should coordinate with your supervisor…[Read more]

– Does one mode make a difference over another?
Yes. Bottom line is I want to catch whichever senior leader I’m engaging at the most convenient time/manner possible. Choosing the wrong mode of communication (i.e. phone call) can imply my issue demands their attention right this instance. Email is my “go to”, as almost nothing requires immediate…[Read more]

Great information Jeff
I am a true believer that in order to give constructive criticism/feedback/opinion, you must first be able to receive the same.
It is also getting to know the person you will be talking to that can make a difference. Not two people receive a particular message the same and therefore you must know who your audience is,…[Read more]

Does one mode make a difference over another?
– It does make a difference. Having a face to face interaction is better then an email or even a phone call because you can put a face to a name. Also, being able to see someone’s interaction in person can tell a lot about that individual, their passion, their dislikes their interest are many times…[Read more]

I recently attended a leadership symposium and the lecturer posted an obscure quote. you cannot manage a soldier in battle, they must be led. Which led to a massive discussion of the difference between a Manager and a Leader.
To my mind there is a significant difference between a leader and a manager. A leader provides vision, builds the…[Read more]

Steve,
Sorry for the delay.
What are you thoughts on getting more NCOs at the Platoon level, like the Senior Scout, the ability to view/edit DTMS so that the PL/PSG can power this down. I’m not as familiar with DTMS, but I can’t imagine a PL sitting there uploading PT cards/weapon cards — he’s probably logging on and having his NCOs work…[Read more]

Thank you for sharing this great information!
As I prepare my self to take over a section, I can’t help but feel both excited and scared. This is a great starting point for me as I learn to understand what junior soldiers and NCOs need of me as a leader.
Thank you.

Warriors,
We’re continuing our discussion thread in the series “Student to Lieutenant.” You can see our original post here, or read the entire series using the tag. This week’s post brings us to our final destination, Phase 4: “Reporting you your First Unit.”
There are three short bits of experience I want to cover in this post, and we’ll do it…[Read more]

A lot of comments were made about the Career course preparing you for command. It’s been a few years, but as I recall them telling us at the Logistics career course is that the course wasn’t there to prepare you for command. It was to develop more tools and get you ready for the next phase of staff work. I do agree that more should be spent on the…[Read more]

George – mhmhmm, Books!, yummy! 🙂 Great post!
I’ve read “Leaders Eat Last” and it was good! I was able to read it very quickly because I found alot of parallels with military training. But I enjoyed how simply and straightforward Sinek explained things without being (let’s face it) overly hooah like ADP & ADRPs can be. I found it helpful and…[Read more]

Jeff,
I completely agree about judiciously closing your door!! Spot on, it’s inefficient and distracting. For me, closing the door was also an introvert recharge technique that I had to balance with the significant amount of extrovert-focused AG work that S1 requires (it’s alot of calming people down, and coaching many people through the same…[Read more] -

DTMS (Tips, Tricks, and Lessons Learned)
I could probably write a thesis on my issues with DTMS, but one of the things I am working on with my Platoon Leaders and Platoon Sergeants is to not fret about what you cannot control. I have zero control over the implementation of DTMS and instead must focus on how to make it easier for my Troop. Since,…[Read more]

We are constrained by the fact that we are MTOE’d one 10k forklift and one 6k forklift. The ADA BN takes the 10k to use for missile reload, so our SSA is denied the MHE ability at the SSA. We do not have the assets to load and move containers including our own BOH containers that our ASL is currently in.
I think the DFEM is a good idea in…[Read more]

Our TMRs are generally not supported and I know we would not receive distribution attachments for our deployment. The BDE S4 and I have tried to get the BDE CDR and CG to understand the restraints that we have in our specific SSA MTOE construct, but we are told that we have to expeditionary with our organic assets. Our main problem is that we…[Read more]
