You may or may not be aware, but the Army has published TC 4-11.46 Sustainment Unit Gunnery and Live Fire Exercise Strategy. This a relatively new TC (DEC 2016). Chapter 7 goes through crew evaluations. I hope this helps.

PSTOFAN, hit it on the head. Have him plan a training from start to finishing properly following UTM and using OBJ-T measures to evaluate. Then brief the plan as part of an LPD. Depending on the audience this can be a great way for new officers and NCOs to learn everything that needs to go into planning.

The Vehicle Commander and Gunner are what counts for the qualification. They qualification is good for 9 months. If the TC or gunner have both qualified within the past 9 months, but on different crews then they are now a turbulent crew. Green, Yellow, Red is the easiest way to view. Green is they are in tolerance and qualified together. Yellow is…[Read more]

I used the juggling of glass or rubber balls once for my LT’s. There’s lots of stuff here you could use. he OBJ-T one could be used too. He could also use some issue the BN has as a topic like if its poor leadership or mis-managemnet of tasks find an article for people to read and discuss it.
I find those more interesting then anything about…[Read more]

For sake of time, I am helping a fellow junior officer find ideas of LPD he can work on for his BN. I have provided the CCLPD idea and he will be looking into it further.
What other LPD ideas have you done before? What LPD would you have wanted to see or experience?
Note: he’s downrange so it’s just a small set back but…[Read more]

I’m selfish and I know we always had issues with this during gunnery being in a BSB. What are the metrics for keeping that crew qualified? Same as a Stryker crew? Can we mix and match TC and gunner that have previously qualified on different crews? I don’t see a lot on that but it probably comes from the fact no one really understands why BSB’s do…[Read more]

Logisticus, what do you wish you had learned? If you could reach out and ask for help what would it be?

I have a single question regarding OBJ-T.
1. What is the process for updating and refining the T&EOs. I recently came out of a collective gunnery where the T&EOs were utilized by external evaluators, but they failed to provide a good picture of what we expect a Scout PL to do during a Platoon Screen.
I am all about the idea behind OBJ-T, but…[Read more]

I took command of C Troop, 4-9 CAV, 2 ABCT, 1st Cavalry Division in December of 2017 while on rotation to Fort XXX in the Republic of Korea. I could not ask for a better Troop and am immensely proud of what my Scouts have accomplished so far. I have been in command for just shy of six months, but have learned more than I ever thought I would. I am…[Read more]

I’ve had the honor of working closely with 2 WO (AG – CW3, CW2)Â and knowing many within the MI world. First thing I tell them when I introduce my self is ” as a Junior Officer I am hungry for knowledge so I will apologize in advance if I asked 1,001 questions”. They are by far the most knowledgeable individuals who give you the good, the bad and…[Read more]

Communicating with higher has always the most effective part for me when managing scarce resources. The other options are important and generally need to be understood before talking to higher, but much of managing scarce resources (especially time) comes from truly understanding your higher headquarter’s intent and priorities. If you go to h…[Read more]

My first experience with WOs was as XO for an MI company while a 2LT. We had about a dozen warrants in my company (WO1 to CW4), and I also dealt with the battalion maintenance officer (CW2) and the brigade property book officer (CW3) on a regular basis. While I had some bad experiences with one individual, they have generally been outstanding p…[Read more]

Teammates,
DRMO can be a great resource along with your PBO. While you may not be able to purchase everything you need to meet your training requirements you might find something that can be a combat multiplier through DRMO. Most supply personnel know of DRMO for turning in equipment that is no longer required or serviceable. However, one doesn’t…[Read more]
