Writing from on the road, so short post. My supply sergeant passed the attached on from his last NTC rotation.

I would recommend reaching out to USAR units that might be near to where you’re going to be, and see if you can SUTA (that’s a National Guard term for drilling with another unit/at an alternate location). The USAR is lucky in the fact there are USAR units in Europe, the Pacific, etc., so it should be doable. That’s not to say it might also include…[Read more]

Having a “civilian sector background” I can honestly say that “building long lasting relationships” is everything. At a very young age I was taught that when you leave a job, it is best to leave on good terms and living an open door behind you so that if you ever need to go back or need assistance, that door still open and people will take the…[Read more]

Thank you ae_rollinson!
Awards are getting just a bit better, unfortunately our higher, higher HQ has been pretty nit picky and BDE has been unable to provide us with a standard.
What we’ve opted to do is have our BN XO be the last reviewer and he is technically our standard so far.
I will ensure to use this tool to help Co & 1SG get a better…[Read more]

Good afternoon @jake-bouley; spoke to my husband who is a 92A and has been to a JRTC rotation before their deployment. This was his input, hope this helps or at least provide some guidance
Okay. So looking at JRTC /NTC rotations you will most likely need about 30 days of unit supplies to sustain your day to day operations in while you are…[Read more] -
brock.j.young started the topic JO Professional Writing List: What Have You Written? in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 6 months ago
What have you written?
Professional writing, the ability to convey your thoughts, ideas, and perspectives to peers, subordinates and superiors, is as much a required skill as being able to speak publicly. Whether it’s a decision brief, white paper, or article for a web site or magazine, how well you are able to write can be more important than…[Read more]

I’ll have to think about some of those things (being I’m still a CPT), however there is one thing that I have seen time and time again in officers who are in similar circumstances to myself; that being AGR (active) in the Guard. Full time officers in the National Guard (and I’m sure it’s the same in the USAR) quickly forget that the bulk of the…[Read more]

A point on the pay; yes, Soldiers do get paid, however it becomes a cost-benefit decision. SSG X/CPT G, a mid level civilian or law enforcement professional makes $80-$90k a year before overtime. Normal drill already eats into Soldiers’ civilian careers. Now add MUTA 6-8s (3 and 4 day drills), emergency activations, mil schools, etc. Now you have…[Read more]

brock.j.young replied to the topic What officers expect from LTs in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 7 months ago
This is how bad it’s gotten in many Guard units. I’ve told LTs that if they want to set themselves apart from their peers they have to one thing, give a “sh*t,” just a little. Now this may seem like a simple thing, but look around you. How many officers (and NCOs), actually CARE. Care about their subordinates, care about the profession, care about…[Read more]

brock.j.young replied to the topic Owning Development, what is realistic? in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 7 months ago
This is one of those situations where both are right.
From my own experience and observation, leaders at all levels FAIL to develop subordinates. BN/BDE level ODP/LDP/NCODP are worthless, often dry, detail free PP or briefs with briefers who were chosen last minute (opposed to being chosen for their strength) and given no guidance on…[Read more]

Sapper School (like Ranger School) is officially designated the “Sapper Leader Course” and it is open for all branches. However, attending these schools costs money and it can occasionally be a challenge to get authorized to go by your unit (who will need to pay). Units will often refer to their TOE (table of organization and equipment) to tell…[Read more]

Pretty sure this was required reading at West Point, but I find myself revisiting it as I watch people compete for power. Especially in Cyber, you’ll find a significant percentage that believe “expert power” is all that matters. Difficult thing in Cyber is there’s so much to know, you’re bound to be a dunce at something. Maybe a lot of things.…[Read more]

cale replied to the topic Are you commanding/ leading blind?: The importance of dissent and feedback loops in the forum Junior Officer 6 years, 7 months ago
George,
I think an important piece to this is peer feedback. Despite your best efforts you may not always get good feedback from your troops. Or as I’ve frequently seen, troops with just one or two assignments may not know anything different than their current assignment or the dreaded in my last unit….
A trusted peer can be a great m…[Read more]

@vanezzaospina / Hmm, you asked for writing tools. Maybe providing Attachments to the BN Memo of the specific award templates could help? Also, have you talked to your BC and/or CSM? I feel your pain. AGR, since 2012. Aide, PL, BN A-S3, full time BN 3, S1, Company Commander, BDE A-S3… It never seems to stop.
I recommend attacking it just like any other M-day commander does. Work out a daily battle rhythm of when and what you need to do, and then pen in some time for your Company Command role. We’re lucky that…[Read more]
