The top three will depend on each post. It’s something an IG can let you know what they see. For mine it’s non support and treating people decent.

Coming out of command and being given the opportunity to become an IG all my friends recoiled at the thought. After becoming certified I am surprised I had a decent command. The E8 I sat next to would say the same thing as he was coming straight out of being a 1SG.
George makes a great point. We are here to help just like legal. While we can’t…[Read more]

Post-command free time is awesome!
Time to get fired up and give back to the community that made me successful as a leader.

Teammates,
As a I close out my company command and I prepare for future opportunities a couple questions started bouncing around my little brain, and perhaps there is someone who can help my answer my rather eclectic questions:
1)Â I recently applied for a broadening opportunity, and while broadening opportunities are often seen as detours from…[Read more]

pstofan replied to the topic Was Company Command/First Sergeant Course worth it? in the forum Junior Officer 7 years, 3 months ago
Never went to the course. I heard it wasn’t really worth it either at Ft. Bliss. Just the same heres what we do for a week straight. After time in the seat every agency or situation I would have needed came up. It may have helped but I was also a junior commander of the 4 so having battle buddies helped immensely.
As an IG now I will be…[Read more]

@vanezzaospina – Great work on filling in systems gaps in your shop. This work will go a LONG WAY towards stabilizing processes and creating predicability for folks. Keep in mind that with systems creation, it is a steep learning curve, but the outcome is worth it, every single time. So keep at (with this or other projects)!

@chris_s , this is the second time I’ve stumbled upon you on the Forum here and not recognized you! Ha! Your road trip and partner-in-crime sound awesome! Happy listening.
I just saw your original post included ‘listening to news’. Recommend NYT “The Daily” for 20-30 min deep dives on a single topic, and then a 1 min recap on ‘here’s what else…[Read more]

Thanks,

I completely agree on all accounts. If you are not challenging your views you are not growing. Thanks for the list. I have a few of them on the playlist, but now have a much expanded. I enjoy all the NPR podcasts and as a side note my fiancé and myself all moving out to hood and we rotate between picking podcasts to listen…[Read more]

@ae_rollinson: Indeed, it is my “can opener”, my “hook”, and hopefully it’s interesting enough to get people to think.
And yes, these are short versions of my notes. Definitely guilty of not fleshing out the entire argument. For instance, “commanders brief red” was essentially the main point of an OPD I received a while back (likely BOLC) which…[Read more]

@adam.szcypka – ahh, I think I understand now. So you’re using “it wins wars” as the can-opener to get people riled up and engaged in the topic. Yes?
I’m finding this a challenging topic, for sure. Hopefully that means you will get a great discussion out of the LPD! I admit that I’m not following your arguments very well. I’m guessing these are…[Read more]

@chris_s – Here’s my 2 cents. For me, leadership isn’t strictly the military aspects of the Army, but how we interact with people, why things are so, and applying lessons others (mil and civ) have learned in their own experiences. So, for me, it’s a very wide lens to try to pick up TTPs. That in mind, here’s my list of pods that I keep coming…[Read more]

1.
Never be that leader who is held to a different lower standard. One should take the time to ensure your uniform is squared away, you are physically fit, and you carry yourself the way one should. There is nothing more annoying than knowing a soldier got chewed out for something his PL/NCO/or even CO also did.
You cannot inspire discipline…[Read more]

As an Officer, I have always strived to lead from the front in terms of physical fitness. I believe that the discipline to stay physically fit can be modeled in other facets of our lives as well. Physical fitness is extremely important in the military, and I don’t believe you can preach that unless you are modeling it. I was always out at PT with…[Read more]
